Paint right over the original. Simply take the desired color and apply it over the previous color using a paintbrush. Be careful to apply the paint without covering lines and shading that are essential to the design. Allow a little of the original painting to stay. Use a glaze additive: add two parts glaze and one part paint. Using a glaze will prevent total coverage and help control the amount of paint used to cover any area. You may need to apply several coats of glaze to achieve the desired color. When using this technique, be sure not to cover important details of the painting.

      Sketch of a Painting

Paint the image straight from the client's image reference. When a client asks for a custom-painted canvas painting, they will usually provide a color pallet and images or ideas to paint from. To paint an original canvas painting, a great deal of skill is required. An artist may sketch the image and then take it to the studio to complete.

Customize a canvas painting with digital imaging. Upload a canvas painting photograph and open it in an image editing application such as Fireworks (see Resources below). Once the image is in Fireworks or a similar application, a multitude of things can be done to customize it. Change the image and apply a zoom blur around the image and add a name, for example, or change the color of the painting--there are quite a few options!

Take the digitized image it to be printed. You can have it printed directly on a canvas at some printing companies. Another way to get it to canvas is have it printed on paper and then glue it to a canvas. Glue it to the canvas using Mod Podge or decoupage (see Resources below).
