How to Make a Crochet Scrunchie

Crocheted hair scrunchies are very popular with women--they are a versatile, convenient and pretty hair accessory. Additionally, they are an excellent crochet project for the crochet novice--or even the advanced artisan. You'll find that they are very quick to make and you can easily crochet a dozen in 1 night's sitting. With all of the color choices and styles available, they also make great use of scrap yarn, as they don't require much yarn to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Crochet hook size F or G
  • Yarn of choice (scrap yarn works fine)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a crochet hook that works easily with your yarn. Soft yarns look great for crochet scrunchies, but you can use any scrap yarn that you have on hand. A size G crochet hook works great with worsted weight yarn. For finer yarns use a smaller hook, for thicker yarns use a larger hook.

    • 2

Holding the elastic ponytail holder in your hand, attach the yarn with a slip stitch.

    • 3

Single crochet around the elastic ponytail holder until it is completely covered. The amount of stitches you use will depend on the type of yarn you selected, as well as the size of your crochet hook.

    • 4

Make 1 double crochet followed by 1 chain stitch in each single crochet around the ponytail holder.

    • 5

Join the last stitch to the top of the first double crochet with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you attach the yarn to your ponytail holder with a slip stitch there will be a length of yarn left, commonly called a tail. Instead of weaving this tail in after you finish the scrunchie, hold it over the elastic ponytail holder and crochet your single crochet stitches over it. This is an excellent way to hide extra lengths of yarn while working your project.

  • If you'd like to add beads, put them on the yarn before you attach the yarn to the ponytail holder with a slip stitch. When you want to crochet a bead, simply slide it up the yarn and crochet around it.

  • If working with beads, make sure they are securely fastened before letting young children have the scrunchies. Small beads pose a choking threat.
