Purchasing a refrigerator is not a decision to be taken lightly. It is something that can potentially affect your family's health and well being, as it stores their food. Purchasing the right refrigerator for your situation is very important.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Credit card
  • Newspaper
  • Yellow pages
  • Computer
  • Internet
  1. Step 1

Measure the space where the refrigerator will be placed. Take into consideration how far it out it will extend. If you are shopping online, the measurements of the refrigerator will be given in the specs section of the appliance information. If you are shopping in a retail appliance store or outlet, record the measurements and take them along with you. Tell the salesperson this is important to you.

  2. Step 2

Determine how much of a refrigerator you can get with the money and space you already have. There are many models to choose from. Visit the link located within this article for the latest ratings on refrigerator brands as well as repair records.

  3. Step 3

Decide what type of refrigerator you want, whether it be a side by side, top or bottom freezer, stainless steel or compact version as a second refrigerator. Then begin looking in those categories.

  4. Step 4

Gather as much information on pricing and brands as possible from the newspaper, Internet or by calling and visiting appliance stores and major retailers. Narrow your choices and do research online or in the library with "Consumer Reports" magazine. You can also wait for special sales and deals, for example, ones where you get a discount by using your credit card over a certain amount.

  5. Step 5

Shop for a refrigerator in an environment that is somewhat quiet, low hassle and free from distractions. If the store is too noisy, leave and go to a different store, or go online at home and purchase the item there.

  6. Step 6

Look for the features you want such as color, finish, lighted door, ice maker, water filter and more. Some brands even come with energy rebates so be sure to look for the Energy Star label. This also indicates they are less expensive to run and can be more environmentally friendly.

  7. Step 7

Confirm delivery and installation specifics and costs, preferably before you leave the store or website. You want to make sure you are home for the arrival of your refrigerator.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only buy the refrigerator that is right for you, and not just because it is the latest fad.
  • Make sure you have everything you need for installation ahead of time by asking the salesperson or inquiring to customer service online.
  • Extended warranties usually are not worth the money.
  • If you buy a scratch and dent model, be sure to get a warranty.
  • Never give in to the pressure of a salesperson. If it is a good deal today, it will be again tomorrow.
