How to Pin a Boutonniere

Nobody wants to accidentally prick his date when pinning on his boutonniere. Once your date has arrived, you will traditionally pin a boutonniere on his suit before leaving. The more careful you are, the less likely you will be to hurt your date.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Boutonniere
  • Pin
Step1
Hold the boutonniere in one hand by its stem at a slight angle on the lapel. Move any greenery to the back and have the flower be in front.
Step2
Find where you are going to pin the boutonniere. It should be about 4 inches from the tip of your date's left shoulder.
Step3
Hold the pin in the hand that isn't holding the boutonniere. You will want to make sure it will be strong enough to hold the flower in place. The place you bought the boutonniere will generally give you a pin to use.
Step4
Guide the pin into the fabric on the bottom left of the stem.
Step5
Guide the pin back out from under the fabric and over the stem at a slight angle.
Step6
Steadily push the pin back into the fabric so about an inch of the pin is holding the stem in place.
Step7
Adjust the angle of the boutonniere and fluff any petals that may have been matted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use only the tip of the pin to pierce the fabric and gently glide it so you don't stick your date.
