Paraffin wax baths are used to soften skin and relax muscles. They are also said to relieve the pain of arthritis on a temporary basis. You can dip your hands, feet and elbows into most paraffin baths.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paraffin wax bath
  • Paraffin wax
  • Plastic bags
  • Lotion (optional)
  • Mittens or towel
Step1
The safest way to apply paraffin is to use a heating system called a bath. Fortunately, the prices have come down on these units, and a variety of them are available, from professional grade to personal use. When shopping for a unit, you may want to consider one that has an automatic temperature control so the wax is always at the right temperature. You may also want to consider a timer if you don’t want to leave the unit on all the time. Given the cost of the procedure at a salon, which will range from 15 to 45 dollars per application, you will pay for a personal unit within one or two applications.
Step2
Another factor to consider is the shape and size of the bowl. An oval-shaped bowl is the easiest to use for hands, feet and elbows. If you intend to dip your feet, make sure your foot fits comfortably in the bowl.
Step3
The time it takes to heat the wax will vary from machine to machine. It can turn to liquid in as little as two hours, or it can take quite a few hours.
Step4
If you are dipping for relief from dry skin, apply lotion first, then dip your hands in the liquid wax three times in a row, fully removing your hand from the wax after each dip so the wax starts to harden. Spread your fingers out slightly to maximize the coverage of your skin.
Step5
Place the dipped hand inside a plastic bag. You can easily save money on this step by recycling bread bags; they are the perfect size for your hands. Continue with the other hand. You may find you need an assistant. Once both hands are dipped and covered, wrap them in a terrycloth towel or special mittens, then sit back and relax.
Step6
To remove the wax, remove the towel or mitten first. Then grab the bag and pull the wax off at the same time. It should all come off in one swift move. The few remaining pieces of wax can easily be removed. For this step, it will benefit you to have some assistance. Throw out the used wax, as it contains bacteria from your skin.
