1
Begin by deciding how much you have to spend. Most colognes that cost more will last longer on you and will go further. This means if you can splurge on the more expensive cologne in the long run you may be saving money because you won't have to purchase as often.
-
2
Decide on the scent you are wanting. Do you want a scent that is sweet smelling, woodsy smelling, a clean scent, a flowery scent, or possibly something more exotic or even sexy? By knowing the exact smell or scent you are wanting, it will help to narrow down your choices.

3
Do a smell test. Actually open up the tester and smell it. Do you like the scent? Is it the scent that matches what you wanted? Make sure it isn't too strong.
-
4
Sample the scent, before buying. Spray some of the sample onto your wrist. Do not rub your wrists together. How does it smell right at this given moment? If you can, walk around the store a bit before purchasing the cologne. Smell your wrist again. Do you still like it?

Bring a friend (who has a good nose) with you when purchasing a new cologne. Ask their opinion of the scents that interest you the most. Have him/her sample them. Have them smell them after you apply them and then again after a few moments have passed. Ask them if the scent of the cologne has holding power without being overpowering.
-
6
Make sure you are purchasing the right type of cologne. Cologne can be bought and worn by both women and men. The difference between perfume and cologne is that cologne is a more of a single based scent and perfume is a layered scent. Colognes have a less mild scent, too. When purchasing check the label to see if the cologne is intended by use by a man or women or if it is a unisex item.

7
Look at the way the cologne is packaged. If you prefer spray colognes and this one does not come with a sprayer, chances are you won't use it, or won't use it much. For this reason, you may want to rethink your purchase choice.

Pick the scent you like the best.It may be a scent you like to wear for certain occasions or certain moods. Then again, you may fall in love with it and wear it every day.
