Drawing clowns is easy for an artist, a little more difficult for a novice, but doable for anyone. The greatest advantage of drawing clowns is their versatility. Even the amateur can draw an interesting clown. Pictures of clowns are some of the most beautiful pieces of art, so even if you are not artistically talented, do your best job, follow a few simple guidelines, and draw your own version of a clown. Given the simplicity of clown creation, go for it; you're bound to succeed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sketch pad
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils
  1. Step 1

Set up a workspace on any flat table. Some of the best drawing tables are those made just for artists, but any table will do. Make sure you have plenty of plain sketch or art paper, and a few sharp pencils, then get ready to create a work of art. Drawing clowns is fun.

  2. Step 2

Draw an outline of your clown head. It should either be round or oval. Clown heads are usually a bit more abnormal than a regular persons head. After you create the size and shape of your head, draw the clowns face. Facial expressions and characteristics are very important in making your clown personal. Take your time and be creative.

  3. Step 3

Add a set of larger than life ears, some great big blue eyes, a large round red nose, two round rosy red cheeks and two full red lips. Don't forget some bozo the clown orange frizzy hair, and shade the clowns face white. You can create a happy clown or a sad clown depending upon the shape of the mouth. Use your imagination.

  4. Step 4

Place a hat on your clowns head. Choose a bright color such as yellow or green. Your hat can be drawn tall or wide, large or very small. Add some red polka dots and a big yellow daisy extending out from your hat. Of course you can choose your own color combination, and any type of flower will do. Clowns are colorful, so choose your colors well.

  5. Step 5

Draw an outline of your clowns body. Make him round and jovial. Draw some arms and legs and put a big bright baggy jumpsuit on his frame. Shade his hands white to depict a pair of gloves, and give him an over-sized pair of black shiny boots. The jumpsuit can be in any color or pattern, but try to make it bright and busy. The great thing about drawing clowns is they are your masterpiece. Be original.

  6. Step 6

Top off your clown picture by drawing an umbrella in one hand and a balloon in the other. Or maybe he can be holding a bundle of balloons which take him sailing into the sky. You choose his props. When you are finished drawing your clown, be proud. You have now succeeded in drawing a clown.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your drawing table is the right height and well lit. Drawing clowns should be a positive experience, not uncomfortable.
  • Some famous clowns are copyrighted. When drawing pictures of clowns use your own imagination. You wouldn't want to accidentally draw your own version of a clown, call it your own and find out it already belongs to another artist.
