LCD screens require special care.

After purchasing a new computer, or having a new screen installed in a monitor or laptop, the screen typically needs to be cleaned before you use it for the first time. Techniques for cleaning computer screens vary depending upon the screen technology. Your computer or monitor owner's manual will tell you what type of screen you have. As a guide, LCD and plasma monitors are flat and thin, and CRT monitors are big and bulky. Laptops for example, have an LCD type screen. Follow the steps below to safely and effectively clean a new computer screen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC owner's manual
  • Anti-static cloth
  • Two soft cloths
  • Monitor cleaning solution
  • Apple cider vinegar
  1. Step 1

Turn off the monitor. Shut down your computer or laptop, turn off the monitor, then unplug it from the power source. It's easier to see dirt, dust and smudges on a dark screen.

  2. Step 2

Remove the dust. Before you clean the screen, use an anti-static cloth to wipe off any dust. Pay close attention to the areas around the bezel or housing.

  3. Step 3

Clean the computer screen. For a CRT monitor, spray a small amount of monitor cleaning solution onto a soft cloth and rub in one direction working from top to bottom. For an LCD or plasma screen, clean it the same way except use apple cider vinegar mixed with water instead of the cleaning solution. Don't press too hard on an LCD or plasma screen.

  4. Step 4

Dry the computer screen. After you've cleaned the new screen, dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth. Take your time, making sure to remove any remaining smudges or streaks. After it's dry, go over the screen again using the other side of the cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never spray cleaning fluid directly onto the monitor as it can damage the screen.
  • When you clean a computer monitor with an LCD or plasma screen, make sure you don't use anything abrasive or ammonia based.
  • Never touch an LCD or plasma screen with an object like a pencil as they can break, scratch, or develop dead spots.
