Peach seed planting actually is not the most recommended method to propagate peach trees. The best method is to select cuttings from well-producing trees and graft them onto quality root stock. But, that's not to say it can't be done, and produce good results at that. A tall, well-producing peach tree on my family's farm is the result of a handful of peach pits thrown on the scrap pile one summer, and proves that peach seed planting can be successful. So, if you're determined, here's how to go about your own peach seed planting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Very ripe peach
  • Plant pot
  • Soil
  • Water

    Try Peach Seed Planting

  1. Step 1

Select a very ripe peach, choosing the best looking and tastiest peach you can find. If you have several, try seeding all of them. You really have nothing to lose, and this will increase your chances of success.

  2. Step 2

Remove the pit from the peach with care. Wash off the pulp.

  3. Step 3

Fill a clay pot with potting soil. Plant seed about four inches into the soil. Cover top of the pot with straw and place in a cool, shady spot in the yard.

  4. Step 4

Water the peach pit throughout the winter whenever there has not been enough precipitation to moisten the soil. Keep the pot protected with leaves and straw throughout the coldest months.

  5. Step 5

Place pot in a sunny location in the spring and fertilize. Continue to water when soil starts to dry out.

  6. Step 6

Transplant peach tree into the ground in a sunny location once it reaches about three feet in height. continue to water until established, and fertilize regularly in the spring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plant several peach pits per pot to improve success rates. transplant them out once they get tall enough.
  • Peach pits are poisonous; ensure they are not ingested by children.

on 8/4/2008 Some of the fruit trees on my grandparent's farm came from discarded fruit pits. I wish I had the space to grow some fruit trees.
