Step 1
Notify your school district of your intention to homeschool with a Letter of Intent. Samples can easily be found by plugging in "sample letter of intent" into your browser or by surfing the plethora of homeschooling websites out there.

Step 2
Time to decide on what curriculum you will be using. For first time homeschooling parents, it's sometimes easier to purchase a complete curriculum through some of the curriculum providers such as Abeka Books, Bob Jones University, KONOS or Alpha Omega to name a few. However it's also possible to build a curriculum from workbooks, library books and using online websites such as everythinghomeschooling.com.

Step 3
Learn everything you can about the homeschooling laws in your state. A good site to start with is hslda.org, the Homeschool Legal Defense Association's site which offers a map of the United States and links to the laws of each state. Many people are still not aware that homeschooling is legal in the United States and a viable educational choice. At hslda.org, you will find out when to send in your letter of intent, if you have to file quarterly reports with your district and what basic subjects must be taught.
