Most bosses learn how to lead by watching those who supervise them and from making mistakes in the school of hard knocks. Although anyone can act as a boss, some people have greater skill and potential than others. Not every boss can be a great boss, but every boss can be a better one. The Bossometer helps to determine just how good a boss really is, and his or her degree of effectiveness as a leader. Take these steps to use The Bossometer.

Things You'll Need:

  • The Bossometer
  • Pen and Paper
  • Honest Evaluation of Your Boss
  1. Step 1

    Rate each of the statements in steps 2-11 according to the following scale. For extremely difficult or severely ineffective behavior, assign 0 points. If the boss needs improvement or is ineffective give 1 point; for somewhat effective or adequate behavior assign 2 points. If the boss is very good or effective at what he or she does give 3 points; and for excellent and highly effective behavior assign 4 points.

  2. Step 2

    Statement #1: My boss exercises emotional control. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  3. Step 3

    Statement #2: My boss treats workers fairly and does not play favorites. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  4. Step 4

    Statement #3: My boss exercises wisdom and discernment, has reasonable expectations, and does not look for scapegoats or someone else to blame. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  5. Step 5

    Statement #4: My boss walks the talk. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  6. Step 6

    Statement #5: My boss confronts poor performance. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  7. Step 7

    Statement #6: My boss models honesty and integrity. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  8. Step 8

    Statement #7: My boss promotes worker commitment and engagement. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  9. Step 9

    Statement #8: My boss focuses on achieving the company’s vision and mission instead of money. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  10. Step 10

    Statement #9: My boss has a positive attitude and learns from failure. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  11. Step 11

    Statement #10: My boss helps workers create meaningful careers. Rate this statement and assign from 0 to 4 points.

  12. Step 12

    Add all your points to get a grand total.

  13. Step 13

    A score of 0 to 10 points produces THE BAD BOSS EXTRAORDINAIRE. If you were to look up bad boss in the dictionary, this person’s picture would be beside the definition. This boss is extremely difficult and severely ineffective.

  14. Step 14

    A score of 11-20 points means THE TALK DOES NOT MATCH THE WALK. This boss is ineffective and needs improvement; He/she preaches more than is practiced.

  15. Step 15

    A score of 21-30 points produces THE GOOD BOSS. This boss is balanced, steady, predictable and effective. What you see is what you get.

  16. Step 16

    A score of 31-40 showcases THE DISTINGUISHED BOSS. This boss is a rare find, true role model and servant leader. He or she is highly effective and exceptional.
