Step1
Create what moves you.
To be a better artist, you need to follow your heart and your passion. If you admire the intricate patterns of nature, concentrate on creating art inspired by nature. Don't try to create what you think you should create but what you're really passionate about. You'll be much more credible and inspiring when you're creating from your heart.
Step2
Expose yourself to new ideas.
Your art can become stale if you're confined to your studio all the time. Make it a practice to get out at least once a week and visit local art museums and galleries to get fresh inspiration. Visit art museums in other parts of the country when possible. It will give you new ideas and a whole new perspective.
Step3
Study the art of the masters.
Take a course in art history or study it on your own at your local library. To be a better artist, learn from the greatest and the best.
Step4
Spend the day with a camera.
One way to get new ideas is to spend the day taking photos of anything that inspires you. Nature photos, photos of people, animals, and children can all be sources of inspiration when you get back to your studio.
Step5
Put art first.
To be a better artist, you have to make time to create. Too many artists spend time preparing to create and never actually get around to doing it. Realize your studio doesn't have to be in perfect order. Stop spending time cleaning and organizing your supplies and start creating.
Step6
Create in an inspiring environment.
To be a better artist, create a studio setting that inspires you. Play new age or classical music in the background. Open the windows and let the light in. Fill your studio with inspiring sculpture and art objects. These all help to nourish the right brain and help you be more creative.
Step7
Try new media.
Learning to work in an entirely new media can open up your creative channels and make you a better artist. Don't be afraid to learn, grow, and experiment if you want to be a better artist.
Step8
Do it every day.
Create every day and you'll slowly refine your talents.
