How to Make A Homemade Salt Scrub

Pamper your skin with a homemade salt scrub.

Salt scrubs are offered at some of the world's top spas. They exfoliate the skin while stimulating the circulation in your limbs. While the salt scrub products sold online and in spas are often costly, you can make your own salt scrub using common ingredients to recreate spa treatments at home. Salt scrubs can also be made to give as gifts; just package it in a pretty jar.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups kosher salt
  • 1 cup oil (grapeseed, olive, baby or avacado)
  • 4 to 6 drops essential oil (rose, peppermint, lemon, vanilla, lavender or orange)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Mixing spoon, plastic or metal
  • Glass container with a lid

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the kosher salt into the mixing bowl. You can use regular or fine kosher salt for salt scrubs. The fine consistency is good for people with sensitive skin as it is not as rough.

    • 2

Add half of the oil to the salt. Mix the salt and the oil together using a plastic or metal spoon. Do not use a wooden spoon as the oil may soak into it.

    • 3

Pour the other half of the oil into the bowl -- pour a small amount at a time until you reach your preferred consistency. The consistency of the scrub should be a paste. Some people prefer a moister paste while others like it more dry.

    • 4

Drop 3 to 4 drops of essential oil into the scrub. Mix well. If you like the way the scrub smells, then you can forgo the other drops; however, if you would like a stronger scent, add a couple more drops.

    • 5

Scoop the mixture into the glass container. Seal the container when it has been filled.

Tips & Warnings

  • When giving the scrub as a gift, buy an inexpensive, pretty spoon at an antique store. Tie it to the jar with a ribbon.

  • Add a small amount of food or icing color to give the scrub a tint.

  • Do not use the scrub on your face or other sensitive areas.

  • Use caution when applying. Do not actually scrub the scrub onto the skin. It is best to gently rub it on.
