Decks can be built in many different shapes and sizes. This guide will cover the basics on building a square deck, this design could be expanded to almost any size.
Pick location for your new deck. Clear any debris or obstacles. Make sure there is no underground obstacles
Step2
Use string and stakes to make a series of straight lines at 4' on center running north and south and the same running east and west to form a grid at every place the two strings cross or forms an "x" you should dig a hole and insert 4"x4" post.
Step3
Use String and stakes again to square up the outside edges of the new posts. You may need to brace posts to insure the outside edges stay square with each other, then place concrete.
Step4
Now that the post are set the outside frame needs to be built. Nail boards level at the desired height from ground. Cut boards flush with the four corner posts to create a box.
Step5
Now that box is built we need to install the joist. At this point you need to decide which direction the decking will be running north and south or east and west, because the joist will be installed running the opposite direction. Install joist at 16" on center and flush with the outside frame Some blocking should be installed at the corners and any center posts under the deck
Step6
I have made a crude drawing color coding the different parts of the deck. Notice the blocking at the corners. Post = green Outside frame (box)= Red Joist = Blue Decking = White
Step7
Now that the joist are in we need to install the decking. Decking should be started at the two outside edges and work your way to the center from both directions. This will allow you to make any adjustments gradually.
Step8
Now that decking is in we need to install the patio furniture and bbq. Once bbq is ready sit back and enjoy your new deck.
