How to Survive Getting Stuck in Quicksand

When my brother was a teenager he went fishing and took a wrong step and fell into a pool of quicksand. He remembered what my Father told him to do in case this ever happened and survived to tell the story. We live on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and these quicksand areas are around this lake at different points.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Do not panic!
  • Extreme patience.
  • Prayer.
  • Will to survive!!
  1. Step 1

    Try to get yourself into a horizontal position as quickly as you can.

  2. Step 2

    At all times you must keep all movements of your body the smallest you can.

  3. Step 3

    When you have managed to arrange yourself horizontally, start to paddle with only your fingertips to the nearest edge or a hanging tree branch if there is one.

  4. Step 4

    When you paddle with the fingertips the movements should be very small, using ONLY the tips of your fingers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take deep slow breaths,in through your nose and out your mouth, to help yourself to remain calm.
  • Any other movement besides that of your fingertips can result in the quicksand sucking you under!
