When it becomes necessary to visit the doctor or any health care specialist, it is important to remember that he/she sees many patients daily, and he/she relies on you and the information in your chart to help navigate the course of action for your treatment.

Things You'll Need:

  • Medications
  • Letter writing materials
  1. Step 1

First, bring all medications to your visit with. It is necessary to do so because the doctor may be thinking about altering your current medications and may need you to specifically refer to a certain med that may not be so beneficial. For example, if a medication causes you drowsiness or causes your heart rate to increase, you may need to show the medication to the doctor. Also, be certain to be truthful about all symptoms and the length of time you have been experiencing them in order to help the doctor gain a more thorough understanding of what the illness/condition may be.

  2. Step 2

Next, it is important to write down – prior to your visit – any symptoms you have. Include how long these symptoms have been occurring and in what part of your body they are felt the most. Doing this helps the doctor better pinpoint the problem as opposed to just treating you for a vague description of the problem.

  3. Step 3

Finally, if you have concerns between visits, write your doctor a letter prior to your next scheduled visit. By doing so, it gives the doctor time think about how to tailor your visit to specifically to you as opposed to just providing you with a general visit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Write your doctor a letter about any symptoms you may be experiencing in between visits.
  • Doctors see many patients thus making it easy to receive a general diagnosis if direct, specific symptoms are not shared.
