No matter your brick and mortar business (provided you aren't the owner of an adult bookstore), you can gain attention and traffic to your location using "Back to School" as the lead to get some free press and new customers in the front door.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bulk school supplies
  • Press release
  • Friendly staff
  1. Step 1

Visit your local store featuring back to school supplies. You are going to purchase notebooks and # 2 pencils in bulk. Don't panic! These supplies truly cost next to nothing. Stores like Wal-mart offer items like notebooks packaged ten for a buck or so and pencils are truly inexpensive when bought in volume packages.

  2. Step 2

Write a press release stating that you will be giving away free school supplies to kids in the community on a certain day beginning at a certain time and no purchase is necessary.

  3. Step 3

Make certain your press release includes the "why". "Smith's Cafe is giving away free school supplies to the children in the community because Middletown has been so good to us. We wanted a way to show our appreciation and to give something back."

  4. Step 4

Set up tables with your school supplies laid out and frame a simple sign that says something like, "All supplies are free. Limit 3 notebooks and 3 pencils per student".

  5. Step 5

Whether you're an insurance agent or a restaurant owner or a beauty salon - along with the freebies hand out a compelling coupon or offer for your business.

  6. Step 6

The people who come through your front door may or may not be your target market, but you cannot underestimate the power positive press will have on potential clients and/or customers who won't necessarily show up for the free stuff.

  7. Step 7

You and your staff should be very hands on and very nice. Speak to everyone who comes in. Shake hands, talk to the kids - the kind of person you'd want to do business with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Giving is a win-win situation for your business. Never miss the chance to show your city you're not a business person who only takes and never gives.
