How to avoid some of the most common mistakes in home-buying

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do your homework! There is a vast array of sources available on the internet and otherwise on the subject of buying a home.

  2. Step 2

Buy based on what fits your family. Don't try to anticipate what will happen to the market.

  3. Step 3

Choose a great location. Even within a small area, location counts! If your dream house is on a busy street or next to a shopping center, it's not a great location any more.

  4. Step 4

Don't overlook an inferior floor plan for great curb appeal. Sure, the exterior of the home is very important, but you're living inside.

  5. Step 5

Have the home properly inspected in a resale. Hire a qualified, respected professional.

  6. Step 6

If you're buying a new home, check out the builder's reputation. Ask current residents what their experience has been with the company.

  7. Step 7

Take your time...This is a big purchase, and rash decisions lead to oversights and major financial consequences.

Tips & Warnings
  • An experienced Realtor can be of tremendous assistance when home-shopping, guiding you through each step of this complex process.
