People take candles for granted. Just because, most times, candles are a fun item, people take the care and handling of candles very lightly. After the email and comment box, I wrote some helpful hints for candle safety.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • American-made candles
  • Wax Candles
  • Soy Candles
  • Clean-burning Candles
  • Jar Candles
  • Fruit Scented Candles
  • Time

Step1
There are just a few basics that will keep you safe and keep your home safe while you are using candles. When you pay attention to these basics, usually you will have no problem with any candle that you use.

A. First, there are some candles that are very dangerous and those are the Gel-type candles. Many bad fires have been started by these candles. What happens is that the gel, sometimes, jumps from the candle into the nearby furniture. So, if you have flammable curtains or flammable furnishing around or near the gel type candles, then most likely you could have a fire. The rule for this is to make sure you never leave any candles unattended, but most especially , never leave these gel candles in a room with children or in any room where no one is present.

B. By purchasing candles from a United States manufacturer, you are assuring yourself that you have purchased a higher quality of candle than if you had purchased it from a manufacturer from China or other overseas vendors. Why? Well, just for the simple reason that the other countries do not have a higher standard of inspections, and a higher manufacturing standard for products such as candles, food, meats and other assorted items. So check to see that all your candles are manufactured in America. It is not enough for the candle box to say that it was packed in America, but it must be manufactured in America for it to be a true American product.

Read the next steps to having a safer home with safer candles.
Step2
So, first, American candles, second, never leave candles unattended in a room for any long period of time. (Gel candles take only one second to ignite curtains and everything around them).

Now, goes without saying that you should never leave children in a room with lit candles, but also never leave them in a room with unlit candles if there are matches or any lighter fluids around . Many times children will see the candles and want to experiment with lighting them. So store your lighting materials away.
Step3
If you want to leave candles unattended for short periods of time, the only way that might be possible is if you use the lantern-type candles or the large jar candles . (miascents4u has the large jar candles and they are scented --see the resources section).
Even with any type of safe candle holder, you need the right placement of the candles.

Keep candles far away from bedding, from curtains, from any type of clothing. Keep candles far away from anything at all that could or might be flammable. Even if you do not know if any particular material is flammable, assume that it is and keep the candles at a distance.

And remember, if you are using gel-type candles, these gel sparks can jump ten to twenty feet in the air, so you are simply better off not using them.

Now that you have all the safety rules down, you are all ready to enjoy the candles that you are interested in. You can use them in the bathroom also, again with the same safety rules.

Tips & Warnings

  • When I see gel-type or gel candles at garage sales or flea markets they are usually priced cheaply. I buy them up and destroy them because most people do not realize how dangerous they are.
  • Please do not use gel candles and do not use candles from overseas.
