How to Replace the Thermal Fuse in Sony LCD Projection TVs

Sony LCD projection TVs require adequate space and ventilation to prevent overheating problems. Nevertheless, the TVs do include a thermal fuse that acts as a safety switch when the television reaches critical temperatures. In most cases, the fuse blocks power to the TV until it cools down, and then allows you to turn the unit back on. However, overuse of the fuse or extreme heat often causes the fuse to fail, which permanently prevents power from reaching the inverter and backlight. If the thermal fuse fails, or blows, you must replace it before you can watch the TV again.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the AC adapter from the Sony LCD projection TV and the wall socket. Disconnect any cable connections from DVD players, receivers or other devices.

    • 2

Remove the Sony TV from any wall brackets or mounts if applicable. Spread a soft blanket or sheet on the floor. Gently place the Sony LCD projection TV face down on the blanket or sheet.

    • 3

Use an awl or small screwdriver to pry out the 12 to 16 rubber screw hole covers or grommets from the outside edge of the TV cabinet. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the 12 to 16 screws that secure the rear bezel of the TV to the front half of the casing.

    • 4

Use the awl to separate the front and rear pieces of the bezel casing to expose the rear side of the LCD screen. Lift the rear bezel piece off the TV and set it aside.

    • 5

Locate the thermal fan assembly near the bottom of the LCD screen, and the fuse housing right next to it. Use the awl or screwdriver to gently pry off the fuse housing cover.

    • 6

Use your fingers to remove the old fuse from the two clips in the housing that secure it. To remove the fuse, simply pull up on it until the clips give way and release. Insert the new fuse into the two clips. Replace the fuse housing cover.

    • 7

Realign the rear bezel piece with the front half of the Sony LCD casing. Reinsert the retaining screws and tighten with the screwdriver. Replace the screw hole covers or grommets.

    • 8

Reconnect the power cord and other cables. Power on the TV and use normally.
