Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small tomato plants
  • A garden area or a large pot filled with potting soil for each plant
  • A tomato cage for each plant
  • Water
  • Plant food
  1. Step 1

Growing fat, delicious tomatoes organically is one of the easiest of all gardening projects. Save money! Savor! Enjoy!

Plant tomato slips in the ground after all danger of frost has passed. Before that, plants may be kept indoors under grow lights for a faster start. Plant tomatoes in standard potting soil and add a good quality, organic, vegetable fertilizer. I have had good luck planting outdoors in large pots with good drainage. Pots discourage pests and eliminate soil problems, without using pesticides. Put each plant in its own pot. The planting spot needs full sun, all day.

  2. Step 2

Use tomato cages to keep fruit off the ground or train the vines to grow up a trellis or on chicken wire with large holes. Attach the trellis or wire to poles secured in the pot, ground, or to a fence. If the wire is attached to a fence, leave room for the vines to spread behind it.

  3. Step 3

Choose different kinds of tomatoes and plant one or two each month for two months (May and early June). This will give you a constant source of fruit. Often small fruit has the most flavor. You may can tomatoes, but it’s easier to wash, chop, and freeze the ones you can’t eat right away. Wash, peel, and whirl them in a blender or food processor and then freeze the sauce. Or, consult a good cookbook for canning instructions.

  4. Step 4

Water organic tomatoes daily in hot weather. Soil should be damp at all times, but leaves, stems, and fruit should be dry to avoid mold and mildew. Never use pest control! If any tomato worms appear, pick them off. Each month use an organic fertilizer and a couple tablespoons of Epsom salts for food (really!). You will be amazed at the results! Pick the tomatoes when they turn a rich, red color.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vines will quit producing when the weather turns cold. Remove the old vines and plant new ones each year.
  • Wash the tomatoes before eating.
