Kill Fescue in a Bermuda Lawn

Ridding your beautiful bermuda grass lawn of fescue clumps is as easy as a summer watering. Follow these simple steps, and you will be a 'put' away from having the smooth fairway-like lawn you've always been after.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Round-Up Herbicide
  • Spray bottle (size depends on the amount of fescue)
  1. Step 1

WHAT? You will need to buy a couple of supplies to get started. First, go to your local hardware store and buy a bottle of RoundUp brand herbicide. It comes in a variety of containers; unless you have a very large area of fescue to kill, the small hand-held bottle will work fine.

If you have a large area of fescue to kill, you will need the Round-Up Pro concentrate and a 1 or 2 gallon pump sprayer. Both can be picked up at your local Lowe's or Home Depot.

  2. Step 2

WHEN? The best time to kill these fescue clumps is just before the bermuda grass comes out of dormancy, late winter and early spring. The reason for this is that you want to kill the fescue (which will be thriving at this time) and not your beautiful lawn.

However, if your bermuda grass is already prominent, you can go ahead and carefully spray the fescue clumps. Yes, the surrounding grass will die, but it will grow back in a month or two.

Try to pick a day that is not windy to avoid RoundUp drifting to surrounding vegetation. Also, avoid days threatening of rain to give the RoundUp time to infiltrate the grass blades.

  3. Step 3

HOW? If using a concentrate, carefully mix your RoundUp and water to the ratio specified on the label. If not, you are ready to go. Try to spray directly in the middle of the clump without overspraying the surrounding ground cover. Feel free to spray any unwanted weeds at this time as well.

  4. Step 4

HOW LONG? The fescue clumps will begin to brown within a few days, and should be dead within a couple of weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use this method in the spring for large clumps of crab grass, weeds, and other unwanted growth in your lawn!
  • Please follow safety guidelines when handling and applying any herbicide.
