Things You'll Need:
- Essentials oils rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender
- Garlic, either minced or supplements or in food
- Long sleeved shirts and pants
- Sunscreen
- Marigolds
- Electric Fans
-
Step 1
Get rid of attractants around your yard. Look around your yard and get rid of standing water, garbage or non-natural fragrances like scented candles. I even bring my cat’s outdoor water bowl inside and put it out only when she is. If you have a pond or birdbath, try surrounding it with plantings of rosemary and lavender, herbs that discourage them. Marigolds are also known to discourage them.
-
Step 2
Make yourself unappetizing by avoiding putting on the mosquitos’ version of “marinade”, i.e. lotions, perfumes or hair products with flowery or sweet scents. If you must wear scented products, use something with lavender and/or rosemary oil. Avon’s Skin-so-Soft has been known for years to stop mosquitos biting. Do double duty by adding about 10 drops of eucalyptus oil to your sunscreen - eucalyptus repels the mosquitos and the sunscreen saves your skin. Note - Only put this concoction on your body, not face.
-
Step 3
What gets rid of bloodsuckers like vampires and you-know-what? Garlic! Eat more garlic, a true mosquito repellant, the more you eat it will come out of your pores and make you smell and taste bad (to the mosquitos). Garlic supplements also work to this end. If you prefer an external approach, buy the jars of minced garlic and sprinkle a few pieces around the perimeter of your porch, 3 feet apart or try mosquito barrier below.
-
Step 4
Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants if you can bear it when you do gardening or are outside for prolonged periods of time.
-
Step 5
Place ceiling fans in outdoor rooms or use electric fans around outdoor areas like porches and patios. Mosquitos like still, hot air, they will stay away from wind.
