Everyone has a name. How did yours get picked.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A soon to be new baby without a name picked out.
  1. Step 1

Ask the grandparents for suggestions. Older people related to the new baby always have idea's on this subject and like to be asked. Even if you do not use a name they recomend, they will remember that you asked for years to come.

  2. Step 2

Ask friends to recomend names. Host a social event or dinner where recomendations can be written annonmously and collected. Then read out loud over dessert so everyone can provide feedback about the name without any one person having to claim credit for the chosen one.

  3. Step 3

Select the name of an ancestor. Re-using family names can be traditional and giving your new baby the name of a ancestor can be a great way to attach your new baby to their roots.

  4. Step 4

Get a book on baby names. There are many books that describe more unusual names and meanings. If your surname is Smith, perhaps you want something more distinctive for your baby than 'John'.

  5. Step 5

Ask your Doctor. They usually have good advice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using alternte spellings of common names is quite common these days.
  • Using 'Rainbow', 'Moonboom' or similiar names may not be appropiate.
  • Have fun, but remember you will have to say the selected name for many years, pick one you like to say out loud.
  • Avoid stereotypical names.
