Leaves of three; leave them be! Heed this warning and you will fair better. What to do when you have had contact with Poison Ivy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step in treating Poison Ivy exposure is identification. If you know what the plant looks like you are more likely to avoid it! What to do though if you have been in contact with this menace of a plant.

The first step in treatment is to flush the exposed area. Rinse immediately or as soon as possible preferable with cool water and if possible soap.

Do not scratch or rub the exposed area on clothing, furniture, pets, or other areas of your body. This will spread the oil.

  2. Step 2

Take Benadryl or other antihistamine to help the swelling.

Check with a doctor before administering medications especially to infants, children and the elderly.

  3. Step 3

See a clinic or doctor for prescription ointment and if necessary prescription medications. Doing this in the early stages may help to limit symptoms and identify allergies.

  4. Step 4

To help treat the itching; take hot showers or bathes. This will cause severe itching initially but will help your body to release the histamines and aid you in getting a few hours of relief.

Note: Never give hot bathes to minors or pregnant women!

  5. Step 5

Continue treating and wait it out. The symptoms may persist for a number of weeks.
