    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Clay soil
    • Very large container
    • Lotus plant
    • Water
      • 1

Plant your lotus in the largest container you can find. A large tub will look great. And if you want to put a lotus into your pond, make sure it is in a big container WITHOUT HOLES. Lotus roots do not like being disturbed so if the roots wander out holes in the pot and into the pond, they will range all over the place and you will likely kill the plant if you cut them off. If they remain contained by 'walls', providing you give the root system sufficient room to grow, you can grow your lotus safely in a pond or even move the pot whenever you want. Again, be careful with the fragile and brittle roots when planting or transplanting.

Lotus plants need at least 6 hours of full sun.

      • 3

Unlike many waterlilies, the lotus roots need to be only 6" under the water level. They'll do fine at a foot or so, but try not to plant them too deeply.

      • 4

Lotus plants have very few pests, so once they have good sun and their roots are well settled into a spacious pot, they should need little extra care. Occasionally ants will introduce aphids onto the leaves. A spray of hose water will wash these insects off easily, though.

Expect your lotus to die back right under the soil level in the winter and be patient. Sometimes they take a while to awaken in the spring. But these plants grow very quickly once they become active. Keep them safe from strong frosts.

The big, bold leaves of the lotus are equaled in beauty only by the large, single blooms. Most flowers are in soft reds, pinks, yellows or whites. There is nothing more elegant and soothing than a lotus plant. You can grow one in a tub or pond and everyone will admire it!
