It has been observed lately that there are some poor people who have never learned proper movie theatre etiquette. This is a crash course on how to behave while watching a movie in public.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money for ticket
  • Money for snacks
  • Proper attire
  • Cell phone with a silence button
  • Inside voice
  1. Step 1

Arrive at the movie theatre approximately 30 minutes prior to the stated time of the movie. If it is a small, slow theatre and a weekday or matinee time, arriving 15 minutes before the show is adequate. If it is a busy theatre on a weekend night, more than 30 minutes may be necessary. It is best to get your seat prior to the beginning of the previews as to not upset others while finding a seat.

  2. Step 2

Purchase snacks prior to the start of the feature presentation. It is inconvenient to climb over other movie goers and upset their viewing experience. If you think you are going to behave and not get the unhealthy bucket of popcorn but secretly know you will not make it through the previews without it, just go for it. It's inevitable.

  3. Step 3

As soon as you enter the auditorium, all cell phones and the like should be silenced or turned off. If you have kids at home with a babysitter or are expecting a life altering phone call, it is okay to put it on vibrate in your pocket. Do not open your cell phone once the movie has started unless you are safely in the lobby. The bright lights of a cell phone tend to kill the mood of the movie to those seated around you. It is a dark theatre and a bright light tends to stand out. If you must text, leave the auditorium or stand in the hallway out of view of those trying to enjoy the film. Talking on the phone during the movie is out of the question. Even if you think you are speaking in a whisper.

  4. Step 4

If you are sitting in a busy theatre, and there is an empty seat next to you and an empty seat next to your movie going companion, scoot over so that there are two available seats next to each other. It is more rare for someone to attend a movie alone than with a guest.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not go to a movie if a life altering phone call is expected.
  • If you are on a date with a person you would really like to have a conversation with, might I suggest a coffee shop as opposed to a movie theatre.
  • If you are annoyed with a movie goer who is not obeying with the laws of theatre etiquette, inform the management of the disturbance as opposed to trying to reason with this person on your own.
