This is a modified version of my favorite German chocolate recipe. The cake is spongy and majorly chocolaty with an additional drizzle of chocolate sauce. This cake is truly wonderful. Add some chocolate frosting for a chocolate overload. I like to call it death by chocolate.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 egg whites
  • chocolate sauce
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and grease 2 round 9-inch cake pans.

  2. Step 2

Microwave chocolate and water on high for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Stirring until all chocolate is melted and smooth. Be careful to watch for bubble over.

  3. Step 3

In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt and set aside.

  4. Step 4

In a large bowl, cream 1 cup butter and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Add 4 egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the chocolate water and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add the flour mixture a little at a time and then finish with the buttermilk beating after each addition until smooth and silky.

  5. Step 5

In a separate bowl, beat 4 egg whites on high until soft peaks form. Gently fold into the batter. Pour batter into 2 greased round 9-inch pans.

  6. Step 6

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 22-25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Cool completely.

  7. Step 7

Slice cake into 4 layers, drizzle chocolate sauce over one layer then spread with a butter knife. Next add the frosting right over the top of the chocolate sauce, repeat until all 4 layers are stacked but do not do the top layer. Frost the outside of the cake and slice. Before you are ready to eat top with an additional drizzle of chocolate sauce.
