Things You'll Need:
- A craftsman riding mower
- A belt
-
Step 1
There will most probably a belt diagram on the mower, but if you don't find one, I'll advice you to sketch one before removing the belt.(or take a picture of it using your camera). This is just to help you reassemble the belt back in case something goes wrong.
-
Step 2
First, lower the deck all the way, , and work the belt off of the lower stack pulley on the engine's crankshaft.
You'll most probably have to move one or two belt keepers to do so.
To change the drive belt, you will have to remove both the deck belt and the deck. Once that is done, engage the parking brake as this will de-tension the belt.
You will also need to flip up the seat and pull the battery box to access the pulley on the transaxle. -
Step 3
Pull the belt loose from the transaxle first, then look underneath and unwind it from the tensioner pulley(s) and take it off of the upper stack pulley on the engine.
Again, have a visual reference to re-install-DO THIS BEFORE YOU TAKE THE BELT OFF! Install everything in reverse order of taking it apart and you're done!

on 7/22/2009 WOW-That's some DARN poor advice-assuming that the original belt isn't broken & OFF machine is arrogant-I've been doing this for 40 yrs. and haven't removed a battery YET. You DID NOT say to depress clutch-a MUST to remove tension-if belt is still on machine-and almost ALL mowers do not require removing entire deck-just some supports. No reason to remove from transaxle-OR transmission (many machines have separate tranny) first-remove from ENGINE FIRST-smaller & more accessible pulley-removes ALL tension more easily. I can't believe you don't mention tensioner pulley til end-that is CLUTCH-and it's the FIRST thing you attend to!
