Things You'll Need:
- A pen and some paper.
- An internet connection or a ride to the library.
-
Step 1
Choosing a cat that will fit your lifestyle will take some soul searching and a little time to do some research. Grab your pen and paper and lets get started.
-
Step 2
Take a few minutes and identify some of your own lifestyle traits. Are you an active person or kind of lazy? Are you home a lot or do you work long hours? Are there kids in the house? Go ahead and make a list of all the things that are important to you.
-
Step 3
Next lets make another list. Considering the points you made about your lifestyle, list out the things you would want in a cat. Long hair or short. The longer the hair the more grooming the cat will require. Are you up for it? Do you want your cat to be independent or a lap warmer? Just take a little time and think about what the perfect cat would be like.
-
Step 4
So we have our lists and we know just what we're looking for. Time for a little research. Use the internet or head to your local library and start looking up cat breeds. An easy way to start this is to start with hair length. If you are looking for a long haired cat search for long haired breeds. This may take a little time but in the end you will be happy.
-
Step 5
Well now that you have narrowed down the possibilities some it's time to actually find the cat. I highly recommend you look around and find any shelters in your area that practice euthanasia. If at all possible please adopt your cat from one of these kinds of shelters.
-
Step 6
Most shelters I have been to have a cat room where there are several cats and you can just go in and sit with them. Do this. Just sit there and watch the cats for a bit. See which ones come up to you and which are too shy. After a little bit you should be able to identify a cat or two that are likely candidates. If your shelter has private rooms choose that cat most appealing to you and spend some one on one time. This will help you get to know that cat just a bit before you decide.
-
Step 7
Once you have the cat you want just adopt it. Most of the time there will be fees to pay and paperwork to fill out. Once this is all complete take your new cat home and enjoy your new companion.

on 11/14/2008 Nice points on choosing a new furry friend. I have a litter of kittens looking for homes... I hope their new owners take the time to really think about their addition before coming to get one.
