Depression is more than just a down in the dumps day where your boyfriend/girlfriend didn't call and your boss is mad at you for being late. It goes far beyond sadness and affects your entire body, mind and spirit. Though the road out of the darkness is long and hard, it is possible to see the light again.

Things You'll Need:

  • Phychiatrist
  • Psychologist
  • Friend and/or family support
  • An exercise routine
  • A hobby or a place to volunteer
  1. Step 1

Get Help. Don't sit alone staring at the wall wondering what you should do. Get a therapist. If you have major depression, you will probably need both a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

  2. Step 2

If you are prescribed medicine, take it the way you are supposed to. Skipping or lowering doses without supervision will put you at risk for more depressive episodes and nasty medicine side effects.

  3. Step 3

Exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes. Several articles on this subject are available at psychologytoday.com. Exercise provides a sense of accomplishment and stimulates the production of endorphines, the feel good chemicals we need. Also studies show that exercise has a positive effect on the vagus nerve, which is shown to have a direct effect on depression.

  4. Step 4

Don't sit around and ponder where it all went wrong. You'll end up doing that for days, weeks, months, even years and at the end of all of it, you still won't know where it all went wrong. Get involved. Volunteer to help others or animals. Get out of your own head.

Tips & Warnings
  • I wrote this not only for others but to remind myself of what I need to do. I've spend hundreds of hours looking for the answer and talking to therapists and I'm giving you what I've found.
  • Go to the ER if you have suicidal thoughts.
