Step 1
The reaction to poison ivy usually shows up 24-48 hours after exposure and lasts up to three weeks. If the rash is in sensitive parts of the body such as the eyes, or you develop a fever, or it is widespread, seek medical attention. Usually severe cases of poison ivy are treated with antibiotics.
-
Step 2
For those who have an annoying reaction, there are some home remedies to relieve the itching. You can make a paste out of baking soda and water and apply to the rash. A paste made with Epsom salt and water works too.
-
Step 3
Another home remedy is Listerine. Douse the area and scrub. This will stop the itching, but it also will sting. Preparation H has been known to relief the burning and clear up the rash.
-
Step 4
Benedryl is an antihistamine that can be taken to relief the itching. Hydrocortisone is a topical cream that will relief the itching. Calamine lotion has been around for years. Ivy Dry products use zinc acetate and have been found to be very effective.
-
Step 5
Ice packs and cool baths help relieve the itching and burning as well.
