How well you can chip has a huge impact on your golf game. A good chip can mean the difference between a three putt and a one putt. Here are some tips on how you can stick a chip on the green.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you don't already, get yourself a sand wedge as well as a 60 or 62 degree lob wedge for your bag. They give you a lot of flexibility on chips.

  2. Step 2

One of the most important aspects of chipping is keeping your left arm straight and your wrist locked in place throughout the swing. Many people try to chip with their wrists by turning their wrists as they take their downswing. This only creates bad contact. Keep your wrist locked in place and let your arms and shoulders do the work.

  3. Step 3

Keep the ball in the middle of your stance to avoid chunking and fat hits.

  4. Step 4

Turn your entire body away from the ball slightly. Essentially, you are opening your stance so that your body, if you are right handed, is actually point to the left of the hole but your clubface alignment is still at the hole. What this does is promote more solid contact because an open stance keeps the hole in sight longer.

  5. Step 5

Take a half backswing and come down quick on the ball to pop it in the air. As long as you are using a sand or lob wedge, coming down quick and steep on the ball will pop the ball up in the air and reduce roll once the ball gets on the green, helping to stick your wedge shot.

  6. Step 6

Follow through halfway, as it promotes a truer swing speed.

  7. Step 7

Always consider the slope of the green. A chip is no far cry from a putt, so you should adjust your chip line to accommodate for any break on the green.

  8. Step 8

If you are having trouble getting the ball in the air, practice getting under the ball at a steep angle. If you're still not confident in a lob shot, take out a hybrid or 7 iron and run the ball on the green.
