After reading an article from Marlainemarie on recycling I thought I would write an article on disposing of waste oil. Like myself there are lots of folks out there that prefer to do their own vehicle maintenance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Used milk jugs, antifreeze jugs, any large plastic containers. Funnels and an oil drain pan. Shop towels, oildry, sawdust and/or newspaper would be a plus too.
  1. Step 1

After you've drained that old oil from you're vehicle, its time to put that stuff in a different container. I have found that used gallon plastic milk jugs work pretty good. Use a wide mouthed funnel to transfer your oil from drain pan to milk jug.

  2. Step 2

Before you start pouring that old oil into the jug you'll need to somehow brace that jug from falling over right in the middle of pouring. I have an old home made tool carrier that works perfect for this. OK now, I know not everybody has this type of thing laying around their garage. So, be inventive and brace it another way. Like a milk crate or have a pal hold the damn thing until you figure out a way to stabilize that jug for the next time you change oil.

  3. Step 3

OK, after that fiasco throw the cap on your container.Make sure the cap is secured so you have no leaks. Store that jug somewhere and after you accumulate a few of these its time to take them for disposal.

  4. Step 4

Most auto parts stores will take your drain oil free of charge. I have also found that those Quick Oil Change stations will help you out too. Not all but most.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a few calls to your local parts stores and fast oil change places just to be sure that they will accept your drain oil. I have also seen people use their old oil to keep dust down on gravel driveways and roads. You might want to contact your local DPW before doing this.
  • Please do not pour that drained oil down the nearest water runoff on your street. Besides being illegal its no damn good for the environment.

on 1/28/2009 In my part of the country (midwest) a lot of farms and mechanic shops burn the used oil in "waste oil furnaces" for heat and readily accept clean used oil.
