Barter Services

When people think of craigslist they normally only think of either buying or selling a product or service. But did you know that you can also barter on craigslist? Not sure what bartering is? Allow me to explain.

To barter simply means to trade a product or service for another product or service. There is no money involved.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

On craigslist you can barter anything that is of a legal nature. Here is an example. Lets say you need 4 new tires for your car and you work as a web designer. You can go to the barter section on craigslist (right under the for sale section) and place an ad with the subject “Web Design Services in exchange for 4 new tires”. Then write out a very detailed ad. You want to be as specific as possible. Let them know exactly what you will do and exactly what you want in return. If you are willing to design a 5 page site in exchange for 4 tires then you need to state that.

  2. Step 2

Just like you do with anything or else, or at least you should, be sure to check out the other person before you barter with them. Ask for references and call those references. You need to make sure that you are dealing with a honest and dependable person.

  3. Step 3

You will need to be a little flexible but make sure you are getting a service that is equal in value to the service that you are giving. Each party should know exactly what is expected of them. You should draw up an agreement and make sure the both of you sign it before any work is started.

Tips & Warnings
  • If done right bartering can be a very beneficial tool. Don’t be ridiculous with your ad. You do want people to respond. Keep your listing current that way your ad won’t fall off the page and have less of a chance of being seen.
