There is nothing quite like the rush of challenging yourself in a mountain bike race. While mountain biking is fun on your own, the race environment brings it to a whole new level. There is likely a mountain bike race in your area. Here's how to join a local mountain bike race.

From Quick Guide: Mountain Biking
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mountain bike
  • Cycling shorts
  • Cycling helmet
  • Cycling gloves
  • Cycling shoes
  1. Step 1

Determine the type of mountain bike race that appeals to your riding style. Mountain bike races come in a variety of different types, from shorter, basic races that stick mostly to dirt paths to intense, expert races that travel over rough terrain. You should compete in a race that is appropriate for your skill level.

  2. Step 2

Take your bike to a local mountain bike shop and have it assessed by the professionals there. Your bike should be in solid condition prior to racing. A bike that is not properly adjusted and tuned can lead to injuries on the race as well as poor performance. Your safety should always come first.

  3. Step 3

Invest in proper cycling gear. You absolutely need a bicycle helmet. Not only is it essential to your safety, but most races require all participants to wear helmets. Cycling shoes will help you achieve maximum power in your pedal stroke while cycling shorts and gloves will provide additional comfort for the race. You should also ensure your bike is outfitted with a water bottle holder. Hydration will be key during your race.

  4. Step 4

Visit national mountain biking association websites such as USA Cycling and find your local chapter there. Most states have cycling associations which feature calendars with racing events for the year. You can find additional information on local mountain bike races at such sites.

  5. Step 5

Go to local bike shops. Many employees at such shops are competitive riders and will have information on races in the area. Fliers regarding upcoming mountain bike races are often displayed in bike shops. Many shops allow you to register for races right there in the store.

  6. Step 6

Contact mountain biking clubs in your area. Mountain biking resources such as the International Mountain Biking Association and Club MTB feature information on mountain biking clubs all over the United States. You can even start your own club and contact other cyclists through the sites. It helps to keep in the mountain bike race loop if you are regularly in contact with other riders.

  7. Step 7

Register for the mountain bike race of your choice. Once you have found the race you wish to compete in, simply register by providing your personal and payment information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you have registered for a local mountain bike race, create a training schedule. You should gradually work up to race-day condition.
  • Beware of dehydration, particularly if you are competing in your first race. Drink plenty of water before, during and after the race.
