You may have noticed dog supplement advertising in magazines or on television. But are supplements for your canine really safe? You should always talk with your vet before giving your dog a supplement, but here are a few suggestions on how to choose a supplement for your dog.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider antioxidants. We all know antioxidants are good for humans, but they may also be good for dogs. Some research suggests that Vitamin E and C can help your dog recover from a cold, provide protection against heart disease, allergies and cancer.

  2. Step 2

Take a look at fish oil. If your canine has a high risk of diabetes, you may want to consider fish oil. Fish oil may also prevent cancer, allergies and lower blood pressure. Look for a supplement or find a dog food that is high in Omega 3 and 6.

  3. Step 3

Reduce joint pain. If your dog suffers from arthritis and joint pain, you may want to consider a supplement. Some of the supplements that may work best are injectable, so you will need to consult your vet for proper dosage.

  4. Step 4

Eliminate your dog’s itch. If your dog itches excessively for no apparent reason, he may suffer from allergies. Consider adding fatty acids to his diet. This is available in supplement or you could add flaxseed to his food.

  5. Step 5

Keep a close watch for adverse reactions. Just like humans dogs react differently to supplements. Always watch closely for adverse reactions. After you give a supplement, examine your dog often to ensure he doesn’t have a skin allergy. Having someone hold your dog while giving the exam is helpful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask to speak with dog owners who have used the product. If your vet knows dog owners that have used the product, ask to speak with them. This will make you more comfortable in giving your dog a canine supplement.
  • Never give your dog any supplement before consulting the vet. There isn’t currently a regulatory agency who oversees canine supplements. Therefore for the safety of your canine, always consult your vet before giving a dog supplement. They can assist with proper dosage and make recommendations.
