Make Vertical Salvage Knitting Stitches

Vertical salvage stitches are used to create a neat, even finished border on knitted pieces, such as scarves, afghans or other pieces that have straight edges. Often, even the best knitters are left with lumpy, knotted edges after knitting. Vertical salvage knitting stitches are an easy way to give any piece a finished professional look. Many knitters use crochet hooks to finish the edges on a piece of knitting, but the same braided look can be achieved with knitting needles. Creating vertical salvage knitting stitches is quite easy, only taking a little time and a few easy steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the right-hand knitting needle into first stitch of the edge as though you were about to purl.

    • 2

Slip the stitch onto the right-hand knitting needle.

    • 3

Slip the yarn between the right- and left-hand knitting needles.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the right-hand knitting needle from the back.

    • 5

Pull the new loop up and through the old loop.

    • 6

Drop the old loop off of the left-hand knitting needle.

    • 7

Knit every stitch along the edge, even if it is a purl row.

    • 8

Finish the edge by tying off the row of knitting as you would normally do when finishing a piece of knitting.
