Things You'll Need:

  • Food
  • Knowledge of Kosher dietary laws
  1. Step 1

Determine whether your college has kosher dining options in traditional dining halls or if it has a separate kosher dining hall. If you are lucky enough to attend a college that has one of these options then it will be easy for you to keep kosher.

  2. Step 2

Inquire about kosher dining options with the campus Hillel group or other Jewish student organization. Some of these groups offer their own kosher dining options for all meals, for dinner only or on Shabbat.

  3. Step 3

Think about vegetarian options if you would like to do eat in the regular dining hall. For some students this is a good option. However, for the more observant students this is not an acceptable option since the kitchen is shared with non kosher food and the plates and utensils are used for non kosher meats and dairy and meat products.

  4. Step 4

Equip your living space with the equipment necessary to prepare your own meals. Since many dorms do not allow standard kitchen equipment that may mean living in an off campus apartment. However, if you are creative then you can live in a traditional dorm room. There are many creative meals that you can make with a toaster oven, hot pot and microwave. You might even consider investing in a crock pot or pressure cooker, if your dorm rules allow that type of equipment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to make arrangements to eat with other students who keep kosher. It will be less isolating and more fun that way.
  • Ask questions about who is supervising the kosher kitchen and who is certifying that it meets the standards of kashrut.
