How to Knit a Narrow Cable With Grooves

This neat-looking stitch requires a knowledge of how to do a knit and a purl stitch and creates a small cable surrounded by grooves to spice up any piece and please the eye.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Yarn
• Knitting needles

1. Choose the yarn you want to work with and needles that match the weight of your yarn (see yarn packaging for needle size suggestions).

2. Cast on your stitches in multiples of 12 in your preferred method of casting on (for example, 12 x 4 = 48 stitches).

3. Follow these directions:Row 1 (right side): Knit 2, purl 1, knit 6, purl 1, knit 2; repeat these 12 stitches to the end of the rowRow 2: Purl 2, knit 1, purl 6, knit 1, purl 2; repeat these 12 stitches to the end of the rowRows 3, 5, 7 and 9: Knit 2, purl 2, knit 4, purl 2, knit 2; repeat these 12 stitches to the end of the rowRows 4, 6 and 8: Purl 2, knit 2, purl 4, knit 2, purl 2; repeat these 12 stitches to the end of the rowRow 10: Purl 2, slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold them at the front of your work, purl 2, knit 2 from the cable needle, slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold them at the front of your work, knit 2, purl 2 from the cable needle, purl 2; repeat these 12 stitches to the end of the rowRow 11: Knit the entire rowRow 12: Repeat row 2

4. Repeat these 12 rows until your piece reaches desired length.

5. Bind off, preferably using the basic bind-off.
