How to Make a Boom Mic

Boom poles aren't cheap. They can easily run you several hundred dollars. But if you want professional quality sound on your videos, you're going to need a boom mic. Fortunately, making your own boom mic is relatively easy. And you can do it for a fraction of the cost it would take to buy a boom mic from a store. Things You'll Need

• Microphone
• Telescoping painter's pole
• Two hexnuts (3/8 inch works)
• One hangbolt (3/8 by 2 inches Works)
• Drill with 5/16-inch bit
• Microphone adapter
• Microphone mount

Instructions

1. Take your hangbolt and screw on the two hexbolts to either side.

2. Drill a hole into the end of your painter's poll.

3. Screw the hangbolt with the the hexnuts into the hole you created in the painter's poll.

4. Attach the microphone adapter to the end of the poll by screwing it in.

5. Attach the mic mount to the adapter.

6. Slide your mic into the adapter and begin using your brand new boom mic.

Tips & Warnings

• Try to find a painter's poll with a plastic end so that it will be easier to drill into.

• Experiment with different sizes of hexnuts and hangbolts to find the exact right fight for your pole.

• Take your time when drilling the end of your painter's pole. It's very easy to break the pole by using too much force.
