How to Teach English in Prague

It’s a romantic dream of many: spending a year in the heart of Europe, exploring and emerging themselves in a new culture. Many have discovered the rewards of teaching English in Prague. However, teaching English abroad requires much more than a plane ticket overseas and enthusiasm -- you must be prepared if you want to teach in Prague.

Instructions

    • 1

Take courses leading to certification or a degree in teaching English as a second language, if you haven’t done so already. If you do not have experience or educational credentials for teaching English as a second language, you are going to be at an extreme disadvantage when looking for teaching jobs, especially in the Czech Republic.

    • 2

Learn the basics of the Czech language to help you get around when you first move to Prague.

    • 3

Start looking for teaching jobs in Prague. While you can start looking for teaching positions while you’re in the United States, many teachers opt to travel to Prague before they begin looking for a position.

    • 4

Make your travel arrangements either once you’ve secured a position or if you’ve decided to find a position once you arrive in the Czech Republic. If you want to find the cheapest flight to Europe, purchase a ticket to London; when in London, you can then buy a cheaper ticket to Prague.

    • 5

Hit the pavement to find a teaching job, if you have not yet secured one, when you arrive in Prague. Look through local newspapers and at ads posted around the city to identify open teaching positions and to find possible accommodation.

    • 6

Prepare for interviews with potential employers, creating a list of questions to ask your prospective employers, including how much support is offered to teachers, whether you have to make your own copies of books at your own expense, the starting pay and whether the school provides you with accommodation.

    • 7

Post ads around the city to find individual students you can teach to earn extra money in addition to your regular teaching job.

Tips & Warnings

  • To obtain the necessary work permit from the Czech government, you must first have a contract or an employment agreement from an employer in Prague.

  • Getting a work permit is a time-consuming process, but if you’re going to be in Prague for an extended period, you must go through the process.

  • Teaching in Prague doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be teaching a classroom full of students. In fact, you may be required to travel to many parts of the city each day to teach individual students who need to learn English.

  • When you head to Prague, take twice as much money as you think you’ll need to ensure you have enough money to get by until you receive your first paycheck.
