If you’ve ever been around a basil plant, you know how aromatic this plant is. Cooking with fresh basil adds delicious flavor as well. Basil is also very healthy to eat because it is rich in vitamin A and it is a good source of calcium, potassium, vitamins and minerals. Basil is especially rich in vitamin K, which may contribute to healthy bones in older people, according to certain studies. The leaves of the basil plant also have antioxidant and anti-microbial qualities. Basil has its roots with the people of India and Persia and its popularity has grown worldwide. It is cultivated mostly in the U.S., France, and in the Mediterranean. Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cups of basil leaves
  • 2 cups of olive oil
  • 3 pieces of cheesecloth
  • 1 clean jar with a tight-fitting lid
  1. Step 1

    Put basil leaves and olive oil in a blender and puree.

  2. Step 2

    Pour basil leaves and olive oil into a saucepan and heat on a low flame for three minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Using a few sheets of cheesecloth, strain the puree.

  4. Step 4

    Pour the basil oil into a jar with a tight cover and store in refrigerator.

  5. Step 5

    Discard unused portion after 11 days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Basil oil can be used on salads or to make pesto sauce.
  • Avoid basil oil during pregnancy.
  • Do not use basil oil in excess.
