Step 1
Assume a right ready stance. Place your right foot in front, angled at about 45 degrees to the inside. The back foot points forward at a slight angle to the front foot. Elevate the back heel a couple of inches and align it with the big toe on your front foot. Square your hips to the side, with arms held up and hands open. Angle your shoulders slightly forward. If you do not have time to get into a ready stance, quickly stabilize your feet side by side about shoulder width apart.
-
Step 2
Parry your opponent’s punching arm to the right using the back of your right wrist, keeping your elbow in close to your body. This is the bypass—you will move your opponent’s arm just enough so that his strike bypasses your face to the right side.
-
Step 3
Alternate your defensive hands by raising your left hand up to the right side of your face. Keep your left elbow in close to your body and your left hand palm-side out, which protects your face from your opponent’s punching arm.
-
Step 4
Take a step in toward your opponent’s body, moving with your front foot first and maintaining balance. At the same time, lower your right arm down in front of your body, elbow bent and hand in a fist.
-
Step 5
Bend your front knee slightly while forcefully striking your opponent’s right ribcage with your right elbow and forearm.
-
Step 6
Withdraw a step, moving your back foot first, following with the front foot and maintaining balance. Resume ready stance.
