How to Make Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has many uses and can be beneficial in any home. This age old remedy has been used to protect and treat skin infections, calm nerves, ease muscle aches, headaches, and menstrual cramps, help with arthritic symptoms, and ease minor burns like sunburns. Lavender essential oil can be added to bath water for a soothing soak to ease sore muscles and provide calmness after a stressful day. Or you can mix into a carrier oil like Jojoba or almond oil and use as a massage oil. Although essential oils can be bought ready made in any health store making your own lavender essential oil is fairly easy and if you grow your own lavender it can be satisfying to prepare it fresh. Things You'll Need:

  • Lavender flower stems
  • Gas stove
  • A pot with a grate on top
  • Coffee can
  • Copper pipe
  • Essential oil separator
  • Filtered water
  • Clean essential oil bottles

    Making a Homemade Essential Oil Still

  1. Step 1

    Use a small pot with a rack. This could be a vegetable steamer.

  2. Step 2

    Place a coffee can over the rack in the pot. This is the condenser which will collect the steam and cool it.

  3. Step 3

    Attach a copper pipe to the coffee can and immerse it in cold water. This aids in the cooling of the vapors.

  4. Step 4

    Finally, purchase a separator at an essential oil store to attach to your homemade still. The separator will separate the essential oil from the water vapor.

  5. Step 5

    Now your essential oil still is ready. Follow the steps below to make lavender essential oil in your still.

    Fill the pot of your essential oil still with filtered water.

  8. Step 2

    Stack stems of lavender flowers on top of the rack in the pot. Do not let the water touch the stems.

  9. Step 3

    Heat the water slowly over low heat.

  10. Step 4

    Gently boil the water over low heat for about half an hour.

  11. Step 5

    Take the oil that has collected in the separator and place into dark amber bottles available in most health stores.

  12. Step 6

    Store the essential oil in a cool dry place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not let the stems touch the top part of the condenser when stacked on the rack in the still.
  • Do not let the stems touch the edge of the water container.
