Step 1
Meet basic requirements. Applicants must be at least 19-years-old and have a high school diploma. Candidates with college coursework and military experience are given preference.

Successfully pass the entrance exam. Candidates are ranked according to their test score.So the higher your test score the better your chances are of being selected.

Step 3
Interview successfully. Agencies administer structured interviews to assess potential officers. Panel members are clear about what it takes to be a successful agent and look for certain characteristics in each candidate.

Successfully pass background investigation. As with any law enforcement job candidates are screened for past offenses. Law enforcers have authority to make life-altering decisions of others and should not be of questionable character.

Step 5
Successfully complete training. The academy is designed to train candidates to become highly effective in their job. The length of training can vary from state to state. Some cadets attend training full-time for several weeks while others attend part-time while experiencing work in the field.
