How to Identify Digestive Problems

The digestive system is one of the most important systems in the body. Problems with digestion lead to a loss of vital nutrients being absorbed in the body. This can cause many serious health problems. Therefore, it is important to identify early digestive problems and treat them right away.

Instructions

    • 1

Be aware of your body's normal habits. If you notice a change in your body's digestion and elimination cycles that continue for two weeks, contact your health care provider.

    • 2

Keep a journal to track your digestive symptoms. Write down the days you experienced symptoms, what they were and what triggered them. If you detect a pattern of symptoms you might be alerted to a food allergy. If you cannot determine the source and symptoms continue for at least two weeks, it's time to see your health care provider.

    • 3

Check for symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, bloating and gas after meals. Write down the foods you eat in your journal and make a note of any symptoms that you experience.

    • 4

Check for abdominal pains and cramping.

    • 5

Check for blood in the stools. Hemorrhoids might cause blood in the stools, or it could be something more complicated. If you have blood in your stools, contact your health care provider.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try eating smaller more frequent meals to aid digestion.

  • Eat more foods rich in fiber.

  • Limit the amount of fried foods in your diet.

  • Blood in the stools can be indicative of a serious health condition, including cancer. Contact your health care provider if you detect blood in your stools.
