Graphics design programs have come a long way since the early 90s. These days, graphic design programs are far more intuitive and easier to use. They even offer in-depth help menus to assist lower level users in all aspects of the program functionality. Perhaps one of the most widely used features in graphic design programs is that of being able to add light bursts, lights and lens flares to an image.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paint Shop Pro Photo XI
  • Image file

Step1
Open and run the application. Left-click on the application icon in order to open and run this program.
Step2
Open the desired image file. Scroll to the “File” tab on the command bar and click “Open.” Browse to the desired image file and click “Open.”
Step3
Add light bursts to the image. To add light bursts to the image, scroll to the “Effects” tab on the command bar; a submenu will open. Scroll to and left-click on “Illumination Effects” and then select “Lights.”
Step4
Manipulate lights properties. There are two settings boxes under the lights properties box. Under “Light Source” you can select the darkness level, 0-100 of the lights. You can also turn on or off up to five lights by checking or leaving the light icons unchecked under the lights, labeled 1 to 5 in the “Light Source” box. Under the “Settings” box you can turn all of the light bursts on or off by checking or leaving the “On” box unchecked. You can also set the attributes for intensity, direction, smoothness, cone size and asymmetry by entering in a value for each field. Finally, you can manipulate where the light burst fall on the image under the “Before” box by dragging and dropping the light cursors where desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play around with all of the different light bursts settings. There are many different variations you can use.
  • Always save a copy of the image before making any edits so you can backtrack if necessary.
