Making the Collage
-
1
Cut out shapes from any type of paper, including construction paper or card stock. Also consider cutting up old drawings or paintings which never quite came together visually. Add some abstract colors and images from magazines.
-
2
Attach the shapes to the illustration board using the matte medium. Experiment with shapes and colors to create an abstract design. Keep it simple when you start, because you will be adding lines and cross-hatch marks before the collage is complete.

3
Coat the final collage with a thin layer of matte medium. Apply the matte medium with the foam brush. Coat the entire surface of the collage, without soaking the paper. Let the matte medium dry completely.
-
4
Draw directly onto the coated collage, using your drawing medium of choice. Graphite pencil or charcoal will create a graphic quality to the collage.
-
5
Add lines between colors and shapes when creating a collage with colored pencils. Take the image as far as it will go visually, by drawing out small details as well as large and bold lines.
