How to Do a Feng Shui Rice Blessing Ceremony
Feng Shui is an ancient art that enables you to manage your home's energy flows, and ideally correct negative or problem energies. A common problem is negative energy on the property, and the exterior of the house. The Rice Blessing Ceremony favorably energizes the entire property and everything on it, including you. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 5 or more pounds uncooked rice
- Large glass bowl
- 1/4 tsp. Cinnabar powder
- Unopened bottle 100 proof or higher of liquor
- Toothpicks (optional)
Instructions

1
Set the mental stage. Hold your hands so that all your fingertips touch and repeat a short soothing mantra or prayer 9 times to yourself. This calms the mind and body.
-
2
Fill a large glass bowl three quarters full of rice. If you have a large perimeter to your property, you may need to prepare 2 bowls.
-
-
3
Add the cinnabar powder to the rice. Cinnabar, a red powder, is available at Chinese herbalists. It is also known as vermilion and comes in a natural powder pigment used by artists in painting (see Additional Resources below). Red is a positive and energizing color.

4
Add 9 splashes of liquor from the newly opened bottle to the bowl of rice, while saying what are known as the Six True Words, (pronounced Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum) or another mantra or prayer of your choice.
-
5
Blend the ingredients using the middle finger. For women, use the left hand, for men, use the right. Using your finger, stir the mixture 108 times, while repeating the Six True Words or another mantra or prayer of your choice. You may want to have a pile of 10 toothpicks handy, so that for every 10 repetitions, you can set aside another toothpick, in order to help you keep count.
-
6
Go to the "Mouth of Chi" on your property, which is where your home's entrance meets the street. Depending on your home's layout, it may be where the driveway meets the street, or your home's front walkway (if you have one) meets the street. Begin the "Tossing of the Rice" ceremony by tossing 3 handfuls of rice as high as possible into the air (yes, you may get some on you; that's OK). With each toss, visualize your life and energy being raised and empowered, and say the Six True Words, mantra or prayer of your choice with each toss.
-
7
Toss 3 more handfuls of rice from side to side, reciting the Six True Words, mantra or prayer of your choice with each toss. Visualize negative energy and all your problems being cast aside and leaving the property.
-
8
Toss 3 more handfuls down to the ground, reciting the Six True Words, mantra or prayer of your choice with each toss. Visualize positive energy and good things that you would like in life being planted and growing strongly.
-
9
Walk around the perimeter of your property (clockwise or counterclockwise if fine), and continue to toss handfuls of rice up, to the side, or down where ever you instinctively feel they are needed and with whatever toss you feel is needed. Each time you toss the rice, visualize positive energy, and recite the Six True Words, mantra or prayer of your choice.
-
10
Toss 3 handfuls of rice at your front door whenever you reach that point as you walk around your property. This blesses the house as well as the land.
-
11
Conclude the ceremony by tossing 3 handfuls of rice towards the sky, and ask for Heaven's blessings. Then, flick outward your ring and middle fingers 9 times while repeating your mantra or prayer of choice, and visualizing the ceremony was successful and that your desires and hopes will come true quickly.

Tips & Warnings
Budget time to do this. Once you start, you don't want interruptions, phone calls, or kids bothering you. Focus on the task at hand, and make sure your family and friends know not to disturb you during the ceremony.
Don't worry about birds eating the rice.
Do not sweep up or disturb the rice for at least 24 hours if at all possible.
If you have extra rice leftover, you can throw them about the "Mouth of Chi" or dispose as you want.
Cinnabar should never be ingested internally, so it's important to use a glass or non-permeable bowl, and wash thoroughly and carefully after the ceremony is done.
